(Double Ninth Festival)
 

农历  九月九日 为   传统的     重 阳 节。     因为 古老 的《易经》  中把“六”定为  阴数，   把“九”定为阳数，  九月九日，  日月并阳，两九相重，所以叫重阳，也叫重九，古人认为是个值得庆贺的吉利日子，并且从很早  就  开始 过此节日了。

在古代，民间在重阳节有登高的风俗， 所以重阳节又叫“登高节”，一般是登高山、登高塔。

在这一天，人们还有吃“重阳糕”的习俗。在汉语里，“糕”与“高”同音”，人们会用“吃糕”代替“登高”，祝愿百事俱高。重阳糕又称花糕、菊糕、五色糕，制无定法，较为随意。最高的有九层，像一个塔。

Nónglì jiǔ yuè jiǔ rì wéi chuántǒng de Chóng yáng Jié.  Yīnwèi gǔlǎo de 《Yì jīng》zhōng bǎ “liù ” dìng wéi yīn shù, bǎ “jiǔ ”dìng wéi yáng shù, jiǔ yuè jiǔ rì, rì yuè bìng yáng, liǎng jiǔ xiāng chóng, suǒyǐ jiào Chóng yáng, yě jiào Chóng jiǔ, gǔ rén rènwéi shì ge zhídé qìnghè de jílì rìzi, bìngqiě cóng hěn zǎo jiù kāishǐ guò cǐ jiērì le. 

Zài gǔdài, mín jiān zài Chóng yáng Jié yǒu dēng gāo de fēngsú, suǒyǐ Chóng yáng jié yòu jiào “Dēng gāo Jié ”, yìbān shì dēng gāo shān、dēng gāo tǎ. 

Zài zhè yī tiān, rén men hái yǒu chī “Chóng yáng gāo ”de xísú. Zài Hànyǔ li,“gāo” yǔ “gāo ” tóng yīn”, rén men huì yòng “chī gāo ”dài tì “dēng gāo ”, zhù yuàn bǎi shì jù gāo. Chóng yáng gāo yòu chēng huā gāo 、jú gāo 、wǔ sè gāo , zhì wú dìng fǎ,jiào wéi suíyì. Zuì gāo de yǒu jiǔ céng,xiàng yí ge tǎ.

English Translation
On the 9th day of the 9th lunar month is the traditional Chongyang Festival, also called the Double Ninth Festival. It usually falls in October of the Gregorian calendar. So the number nine in both month and day create the Double Ninth Festival, or Chongyang Festival. In an ancient and mysterious book Yi Jing, or The Book of Changes, number "6" was thought to be of Yin character, meaning feminine or negative, while number "9" was thought to be Yang, meaning masculine or positive. Chong in Chinese means "double." Also, as two nines are pronounced the same as the word to signify "forever", (both are "Jiu Jiu") the Chinese ancestors considered it an auspicious day worth celebration. That's why ancient Chinese began to celebrate this festival long time ago.

In ancient times people would also go to high places to avoid epidemics. As the Double Ninth Festival also focuses on longevity, it is also called "Height Ascending Festival". For this reason people will usually climb a mountain or a tower as part of the celebration.

During the day, people will also eat Double Ninth Gao (or Cake). In Chinese, gao (cake) has the same pronunciation with gao (height). In this way, eating cake should help with their progress in all endeavors. There are no fixed recipes for the Double Ninth Cake, but extraordinary cakes will have as many as nine layers, looking like a tower.
